General

The i-Keyboard 5 by icon is a USB MIDI keyboard with 49 full-size keys and a comprehensive control section. It has a very shallow metal housing that fits on any desk. The controls are located on the left side of the keyboard and include a comprehensive transport section, a channel section and two touch-sensitive strips for pitch and modulation.

Using the channel strip in the control section of the icon i-Keyboard 5, you can adjust the settings of the selected track in your DAW. There's a touch strip for volume, a rotary knob for panning and buttons for arming, muting and soloing.

Een groot voordeel van dit keyboard is de compacte form. Dit was ook de voornaamste reden voor mij om het keyboard aan te schaffen. Echter...

1. De bijgeleverde software is bijzonder slecht gedocumenteerd. De enige manier om uit te vinden wat bepaalde knoppen doen, of in welke volgorde knoppen geklikt moeten worden is trial & error.

2. Bij mijn keyboard is het niet gelukt om sustain/expressiepedaal goed werkend te krijgen. Ik heb dit met een aantal verschillende merken pedalen geprobeerd, maar helaas.

3. De strips voor pitch bend / modulatie vond ik vrij onhandig. De pitch bend strip reageert op de absolute positie van je vinger. Dus omhoog of omlaag benden vanuit de huidige toon betekent hat je moet gokken eaar je je vinger neer moet zetten, en dat gaat dus meestal mis.

Uiteindelijk heb ik na een paar gefrustreerde dagen dit keyboard weer teruggestuurd, en ingeruild voor een M-Audio Axiom 49. Dit keyboard werkte bij mij onmiddellijk na het aansluiten.
